Jim and Sabrina's 1959 Chevrolet Apache 32 Long bed Stepside Pickup
3rd Annual San Juan Capistrano CARe Show Ė February 4, 2006

The alarm went off just after sunrise on this cool February morning. Sabrina and I had a big day planned. This was the first car show of the season and we would soon be headed to south Orange County along with our friend Irv Kushner to San Juan Japistrano to participate in the 3rd annual CARe Show.

Jim and Sabrina's 1959 Chevy Truck
(Here is our truck parked among cars and trucks of all types. It received many complements throughout the day. Sitting next to several very nice customized trucks, our truck was one of only a small hand-full of stock trucks at ths show.)
Irv Kushner's 1955 Chevrolet Nomad
(Irv's 1955 Chevrolet Nomad is all polished up and looking great as usual. Irv spent a lot of time answering questions about the list of factory options this car is equipped with including a rare option in 1955 of factory-installed air conditioning.)

Each year for the past few years, the folks at the Capistrano Animal Rescue Effort host a car show to raise funds to support their groupís continued operations. The group is a non-profit animal rescue group that was established in 2000 by Marsha Schwartze and a small group of volunteers dedicated to bringing humane animal sheltering services to San Juan Japistrano.

After loading up the truck with the appropriate essentials such as hot coffee, lawn chairs and a few snacks, we fired up the old pickup and drove over to Mimiís Cafť in Tustin to meet Irv. Irv is the proud owner of a very nice original 1955 Chevrolet Nomad. He is also a member of the Orange County Region of the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America, a car club that Sabrina and I joined after completed the restoration of our truck.

As soon as we pulled into the driveway at Mimiís Cafť Irv was waiting for us. After greeting Irv, we were soon circling back out the driveway and following Irv to the southbound on-ramp of the 55 freeway. About 20 minutes later, after exiting the 5 freeway and driving a few blocks on city streets, we were at the show grounds. A long line had already formed. The event organizers had us wait in a single-file until each car could have its picture taken. Even though it was a cool morning, several of the cars that had remained idling while waiting in line started to overheat. Our truck started to also get warm, but fortunately we got parked before it got to hot.

This appeared to be an event with about 300 vehicles. There were all types of cars and trucks. In addition to a large number of American nameplates, we also saw quite a few European makes as well. Irv was required to park his Nomad on the other side of the show grounds so we didnít see him for a short time until after we had already looked at a few rows of cars. After meeting up with Irv we continued checking out the other participantís cars and then headed over to the hot dog stand for a bite to eat.

Both our truck and Irvís Nomad received a lot of positive comments from the spectators and other show entrantís owners. One of the unique aspects of this show was that dogs were permitted to accompany their owners. Or, I might better have said, owners are permitted to accompany their dogs as long as the owners promise to be good! We saw scores of beautiful dogs wagging their tales as they greeted many new acquaintances at the show.

The judging soon was underway. The classes were defined in a very broad manner. After the judging was completed, neither Irvís Nomad or our Apache was picked as a class winner. With the awards all presented, we packed up and headed back north once again with Irv leading the way home. While this was a smaller show than some and the judging system was different than other shows we have been to, I enjoyed the show and was glad we had the opportunity to contribute to this worthy cause.
